Desiree Cunningham, MSN, FPA APRN FNP-C, WCC is a highly experienced Nurse Practitioner at the Lake County Health Department, specializing in primary care and addiction medicine. She began her nursing journey at Oak Point University (formerly West Suburban College of Nursing) in Chicago, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2009. With a diverse clinical background spanning medical/surgical, neurology, telemetry, emergency medicine, operating room, and special procedures, Desiree brings a comprehensive and versatile approach to patient care.
While working full-time as a Registered Nurse at the University of Chicago Medical Center, she pursued and completed a Master of Science in Nursing with a subspecialty in Family Medicine at Chamberlain College of Nursing, graduating in July 2016. She is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C), licensed in the state of Illinois, and currently advancing her education through postgraduate studies at Northern Kentucky University. She also holds a national certification in wound care (WCC), further broadening her clinical expertise.
Desiree has over eight years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She spent several years as a hospitalist with Endeavor Health, providing acute care and managing admissions for medically complex patients on medical, surgical, and telemetry units. In addition, she has extensive experience managing chronic conditions in a clinic-based setting and has spent the last three years developing specialized skills in wound care and management.
Throughout her career, Desiree has taken on numerous leadership roles, including charge nurse, preceptor, mentor, and nurse practitioner. She is deeply committed to clinical excellence, maintaining her AANP certification and continuously engaging in professional development to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care.
As an Advanced Practice Nurse, Desiree is especially passionate about health promotion, prevention, and advocating for underserved populations. One of her long-term goals is to enhance care for older adults by addressing disparities in geriatric care and ensuring seniors receive the dignity and support they deserve.
